83 has a disappointing opening weekend, earns just Rs 45 cr despite bountiful Christmas holiday
By Rajesh Ahuja
The disappointing run of Bollywood films after the stupendous success of Sooryavanshi continues with the much hyped film 83 earning just Rs 45 cr in the bountiful Christmas weekend.
83, which had earnings of Rs 12 cr on its opening day, failed to witness much growth during the Christmas weekend, considered a bountiful period for film business.
Though the film recorded a jump in its collections on Saturday to Rs 16 cr, the jump was not commensurate with with the expected spurt in earnings on a National holiday like Christmas.
Collections of the film failed to see much growth on Sunday with the earnings of the film recorded at Rs 17.5 cr.
83 earns Rs 45 cr in its opening weekend in India |
The film has now earned Rs 45 cr in its opening weekend, much below the earnings of the Akshay Kumar Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi and the Hollywood film Spider-Man No Way Home.
While collections of the film in the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh were good, they were below average in the non metro towns like Ludhiana, Amritsar and Indore.
Infact, places in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar recorded poor collections.
The majority of the earnings of the film on Saturday and Sunday came from the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. However, collections at these centres was impacted by Spider-Man No Way Home, which continues to draw crowds in its second Weekend, and the Hindi version of the Telugu film Pushpa.
Infact, Spider-Man No Way Home saw an over 50 per cent jump in its earnings on Saturday and Sunday compared to Friday.
The collections of the film of Rs 45 cr in its opening weekend is much below the expectations of the film trade considering that it was a Christmas holiday, considered to be a bountiful period for films.
The lower than expected growth of 83 is also being àttributed to the fresh restrictions imposed in several states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in view of the threat posed by the Omicron variant.
The threat of the Omicron variant has led many states to impose night restrictions, thus impacting collections of the film's in night shows.
With collections of the film expected to dip during the week days and with the film likely to have competition from the Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey, which releases on December 31, and RRR, which releases on January 7, the scenario for the film, which has been produced on a big budget, seems quite bleak.
Infact, in the current scenario, where the Omicron threat threatens to affect collections of the upcoming films, the road of the film to reach the Rs 100 cr mark in India, seems to be an uphill one.
Directed by Kabir Khan, 83, released on December 24 in Hindi, Tamil , Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions, stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, Hardy Sandhu, Aditi Arya, Tahir Bhasin, Pankaj Tripathi and Deepika Padukone.
The film has earned acclaim from critics for its excellent direction and brilliant performances by Ranveer Singh and the rest of the cast.
Hindi films released post Sooryavanshi like Bunty Aur Babli2, Satyameva Jayate, Antim The Final Truth, Tadap and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui have recorded below average collections.
However, amid the lukewarm response for these films, the stupendous opening of Spider-Man No Way Home raised hopes among exhibitors of the revival of the film business.
Spider-Man No Way Home, which recorded earnings of Rs 33 cr on its opening day, has collected Rs 175 cr at the end of its second weekend and is well on course to earn Rs 200 cr during its entire run in India.
The below average collections of 83 notwithstanding, trade experts are optimistic that the euphoric response to Spider-Man No Way Home last week will continue in the coming weeks for big budget films scheduled for release in the coming weeks like Jersey, RRR , Radhe Shyam, Prithviraj ,Attack , Badhai Do , Gangubhai Kathiawadi ,Jayeshbhai Jordaar ,Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 .
