The trailer and promos of upcoming film Jersey has generated tremendous buzz among cinelovers.
The emotional story of a former cricketer looking to make a comeback ten years after quitting the sport has whetted curiosity of audiences for the film, a remake of a popular Telugu film of the same name.
Ahead of the release of the Jersey, it's lead actor and Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor said that it is the heart touching story of the film that led him to give a nod to the film.
Shahid Kapoor says that he was drawn to Jersey due to its heart tugging story |
'After Kabir Singh, the remake of a South Indian film, I had not thought that I would be doing another remake. After Kabir Singh, I heard a lot of scripts. However, of all the scripts that I heard, the story of Kabir Singh stayed with me.
I saw the original film two weeks before release of Kabir Singh. I cried buckets on watching the film. Somewhere deep down it connected with me'. I felt very motivated after seeing this film. At that time I was 38 and I used to ask myself that I have done so many films but have not got the kind of success commensurate with my efforts.
However, something inside me changed after watching Jersey . The film gives you a message that one's efforts should not be determined by their circumstances. One needs to continue putting in the same effort regardless of circumstances. I felt that if audience also experience the same emotions after watching the film, maybe something good will happen with their lives. Which is why I decided to do this film,'Shahid Kapoor said in a chat ahead of the release of Jersey in Cinemas on December 31.
Shahid Kapoor said that he chose this film for its extremely strong story with an extremely strong script and a new fresh character.
'The reason I chose this film is that it is an extremely strong story with an extremely strong script and a new fresh character. That for me is the right thing to do,'he said.
This is the second remake done by Shahid after Kabir Singh, which was also the remake of a Telugu film.
'At one level, being a part of a remake is helpful as you already know the story. However having done Kabir Singh and now jersey I would say that it is very difficult to do a remake and sometimes tougher to do it than an original. This is because it has to look fresh. It cannot look like copy paste. You have to rediscover it all over again. I feel that doing a remake you have to bring authenticity to the story for the backdrop and for the person you are creating.
In this sense, I would say that this version of Jersey is different from the original. It's the same story but the character has changed . We have taken this film to Chandigarh. Since, the hero is a Punjabi, we made a lot of small changes. His pain, angst and relationships with his wife is very different from the original,'Shahid said.
Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnannuri, Jersey is the story of Arjun Raichand, a thirty six year old cricketer who stopped his cricketing career ten years ago and is now aiming to play for Indian team.
A remake of Gowtam Tinnannuri's 2019 Telugu film of the same title, Jersey stars Shahid Kapoor as Arjun Raichand while Mrinal Thakur features as his wife .
The film, which has been produced by Allu Aravind, Aman Gill, Dil Raju and Suryadevara, also features Shahid Kapoor's father Pankaj Kapur in a key role.
The actor has said that the shooting for the film was held amid the raging Covid pandemic.
'We shot the film amid the raging pandemic. I want to compliment the cast and crew of Jersey for shooting the film in such tough conditions,'he said.
Jersey will see Shahid Kapoor share screen space with his father and veteran actor Pankaj Kapur.
Shahid Kapoor said that it is always a privilege for him to share screen space with actors of his dad's calibre.
''When you are an actor at heart it is amazing standing in the same frame with a great actor and seeing what he is doing with his craft and trying to react to it honestly and learning from him.
I want to work with people like my father, Irrfan sir (Irfan khan) and Tabu mam.(Tabu) . These are phenomenal actors. Being in the frame with them is like learning how to act. It is a privilege for me to share screen space with actors of my dad's Calibre,'Shahid Kapoor said.
Shahid said that for him any words of praise from his father for his performance are special.
'It feels very special when dad praises any of my performances, 'he said.
Jersey was earlier scheduled to release in August last year but it' was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jersey marks Shahid Kapoor's return to the big screen after a long gap. He was last seen in the film Kabir Singh, released in 2019.
Shahid Kapoor will in the coming days also be seen in a yet untitled web series helmed by Raj and DK and to be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. The web series features him opposite Raashi Khanna.
