83 earns Rs 28 cr in two days, witnesses less than expected growth on Christmas holiday

By Rajesh Ahuja

After  above average earnings on its opening day,  the film 83 saw a jump in its collections on its second day on Saturday,  taking its two day collections to
Rs 28 cr.

Though the film, based on India’s historic World Cup victory in 1983, saw a 30 per cent growth in its collections on Saturday,  the growth was not commensurate with the expected spurt in earnings on a National holiday like Christmas.

The film, which had collections of Rs 12 cr on its opening day,  earned Rs 16 cr on Saturday,  which was below the expectations of the film trade considering that Saturday was a Christmas holiday,  considered  a bountiful period for films.

83 has earned Rs 28 cr in two days

The majority of the earnings of the film on Saturday came from the metro cities like Delhi,  Mumbai and Chandigarh. However,  collections at these centre's was impacted by Spider-Man No Way Home,  which continues to draw crowds in its second Weekend,  and the Hindi version of the Telugu film Pushpa.

Infact, Spider-Man No Way Home saw an over 50 per cent jump in its earnings on Saturday compared to Friday.

The lower than expected growth of 83 is also being àttributed to the fresh restrictions imposed in several states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi  and Uttar Pradesh in view of the threat posed by the Omicron variant.

The threat of the Omicron variant has led many states to impose night restrictions,  thus impacting collections of the film's in night shows.

Trade experts,  however,  say that the film could witness further growth in collections on Sunday.

Directed by Kabir Khan,  83 had earnings of Rs 12 cr on its opening day, becoming one of the highest openers for Ranveer Singh and the second biggest opener from Bollywood post the Pandemic after Sooryavanshi .

83 is Ranveer Singh's seventh highest opener after Padmaavat, Simmba, Gully Boy,  Gunday, Ramleela and Bajirao Mastani.

The less than expected response notwithstanding,  collections of Rs 12 cr on the opening day for 83 continues the buoyancy in the box office earnings in the country spurred by Sooryavanshi and Spider-Man No Way Home.

While Hindi films released post Sooryavanshi like Bunty Aur Babli2,  Satyameva Jayate,  Antim The Final Truth,  Tadap and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui recorded below average collections, Trade experts are optimistic that the euphoric response to Spider-Man No Way Home and 83 will continue in the coming weeks for  films like   Jersey, RRR , Radhe Shyam, Prithviraj ,Attack , Badhai Do , Gangubhai Kathiawadi ,Jayeshbhai Jordaar ,Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 .

Released on December 24 in Hindi,  Tamil , Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions,  83 stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, Hardy Sandhu, Aditi Arya,  Tahir Bhasin, Pankaj Tripathi and Deepika Padukone.

The film has earned acclaim from critics for its excellent direction and brilliant performances by Ranveer Singh and the rest of the cast.
